How to Avoid Getting Scammed on Facebook Marketplace in Nigeria

Facebook Marketplace has become one of the most popular places to buy and sell in Nigeria.

Phones, furniture, laptops, clothes, cars, kitchen equipment. You name it, someone is selling it there. And for many buyers, it feels like a convenient shortcut to finding good deals without leaving your house.

But for every genuine seller on Facebook Marketplace, there is someone else using the platform to take advantage of unsuspecting buyers. And unlike dedicated shopping platforms, Facebook Marketplace was not built with your protection in mind.

This article is for anyone who wants to buy on Facebook Marketplace without losing their money to a scammer.

Why Facebook Marketplace Attracts Scammers

Facebook Marketplace is open to everyone. Anyone with a Facebook account can list anything for sale. There are no checks, no seller verification, no guarantee that what you see in a listing is what you will actually receive.

That openness is exactly what makes it popular. And it is exactly what makes it risky.

On a platform like Jumia or Konga, there are systems in place to protect buyers. Sellers are vetted. Payments are held until delivery is confirmed. If something goes wrong, there is a process to get your money back.

Facebook Marketplace has none of that. When you send money to a seller on Facebook Marketplace, you are on your own. If the deal goes wrong, there is no support team coming to save you. No refund button. No buyer protection policy that works in your favour.

Scammers know this. And they take full advantage of it.

The Most Common Ways Buyers Get Scammed

Fake Listings

This is one of the most common tricks on Facebook Marketplace. A scammer creates a listing using photos stolen from a legitimate seller or copied from the internet. The item looks real. The price looks right. Everything seems fine until you pay and nothing arrives.

Sometimes the item exists but is completely different from what was shown. A phone listed as brand new arrives used and cracked. A piece of furniture described as in perfect condition shows up damaged. The photos were real. The description was not.

Sellers Who Disappear After Payment

You find a listing you like. You message the seller. They seem friendly and responsive. You agree on a price and they ask for payment upfront. You send the money. And then the messages stop.

No delivery. No explanation. Just silence. And when you check their profile, it is either gone or they have blocked you.

This happens more often than most people realise. And because Facebook Marketplace has no buyer protection built in, recovering that money is nearly impossible.

No Buyer Protection on the Platform

This is not a scam tactic on its own but it is what makes every other scam so damaging.

If you buy something on Facebook Marketplace and the seller cheats you, Facebook is not going to get your money back. There is no escrow. No insurance. No process to dispute a transaction. Whatever you sent is gone unless you can somehow convince the seller to return it, which rarely happens.

This is the gap that leaves so many Nigerian buyers exposed every single day.

Red Flags to Watch Out For Before You Pay

Knowing the warning signs can save you from a lot of pain. Here are things to look out for before you send a single naira:

The price is too good to be true: If a brand new iPhone is being sold for fifty thousand naira when every other listing has it at three hundred thousand, something is wrong. Scammers use very low prices to attract buyers quickly. If the deal looks too good, it probably is.

The seller's profile looks brand new or empty: Check the seller's Facebook profile before you do anything else. How long have they been on Facebook? Do they have friends, posts, and activity? A profile that was created last week with no photos or posts is a serious warning sign.

The seller is rushing you: "I have three other people interested." "Pay today or I will sell to someone else." "This offer expires tonight." These are pressure tactics designed to make you act fast without thinking carefully. A genuine seller does not need to rush you.

The listing photos look too perfect: If the photos look like they were taken from a professional website or an advertisement, they probably were. Genuine sellers usually take their own photos which may not be perfect but look real.

How to Protect Yourself as a Buyer

Knowing the red flags is just the first step. Here is what you can actively do to keep your money safe:

Look at the seller's profile carefully: Before you even reply to a listing, spend a few minutes on the seller's profile. How long have they been on Facebook? Do they have genuine activity? Have they sold anything before? The more you know about who you are dealing with, the better.

Ask for more photos or a short video: A genuine seller with a real item will have no problem sending you additional photos or a short video of the item. If they refuse or keep sending the same photos from the listing, that is a sign something is not right.

Do not let anyone rush you: Take your time. If a seller is pressuring you to pay immediately, slow down. Scammers create urgency because they know careful buyers do not fall for their tricks. A real seller will wait for you to feel comfortable.

Never send money without protection: This is the most important step of all. Before any money moves, make sure there is something in place to protect it. A payment you can get back if things go wrong is a payment you can make with confidence. A payment with no protection is a gamble.

This Is Where Payluk Comes In

Payluk is a Nigerian escrow platform that gives buyers the protection Facebook Marketplace was never built to provide.

Here is how it works. Instead of sending money directly to the seller, you deposit your payment into a secure Payluk escrow account. The seller can see that the money is confirmed and available, so they feel comfortable proceeding with the transaction. You receive the item and inspect it. If everything is as described, you confirm and the funds are released to the seller. If something is wrong, there is a structured process to handle it.

Your money never goes anywhere until you are satisfied. That is the protection Facebook Marketplace does not give you but Payluk does.

Whether you are buying a phone, a piece of furniture, a laptop, or anything else from a seller you found on Facebook Marketplace, Payluk gives you the confidence to go ahead with the transaction without fear of losing your money to someone who was never going to deliver.

Shop Smart. Shop Safe.

Facebook Marketplace is not going anywhere. There are genuine sellers there with great products at fair prices. But there are also people waiting to take advantage of buyers who are not careful.

The difference between a good experience and a bad one often comes down to one thing. Whether your money was protected before it moved.

Download Payluk and make sure it always is.
