How to Integrate Milestone Based Payments Into Your Product Using the Payluk API

Every platform that handles large or long projects faces the same uncomfortable tension.

The client does not want to pay the full amount upfront for work that has not been done yet. The service provider does not want to complete the work and then wait and hope the client follows through with payment. Both sides are nervous. And that nervousness slows deals down, creates friction, and sometimes kills projects before they even start.

Milestone based payments are the natural solution. Break the project into stages. Pay for each stage as it is completed. Everyone moves forward with confidence.

The problem is that most platforms have no clean infrastructure to support this. Payments are handled manually, tracked in spreadsheets, or left entirely to the two parties to sort out between themselves. That creates room for disputes, delays, and a poor user experience that reflects badly on your platform.

The Payluk milestone escrow API changes that. You can now build structured, stage by stage payment flows directly into your product, without building the escrow infrastructure yourself.

What Milestone Escrow Means for Your Platform

At its core, milestone escrow means that a large payment is broken into agreed stages. The full amount is deposited upfront into a secure escrow account, but it is only released to the service provider in portions as each stage of the project is completed and confirmed.

Your platform defines the stages. Your platform triggers each release. And the funds stay protected in escrow throughout the entire process.

How It Works via the API

Here is the full flow from your platform's perspective, in plain terms.

Step 1: Your platform defines the milestones: When creating a transaction through the Payluk API, your platform sets the milestones upfront. Each milestone has a name, a description of what needs to be delivered, and the amount tied to its completion. A transaction can have up to ten milestones.

Step 2: Both parties review and agree: Before any payment is made, both the client and the service provider can see the milestone structure. At this stage, milestones can still be adjusted if both parties need to make changes.

Step 3: The client deposits the full amount: Once both parties are satisfied with the milestone structure, the client deposits the full project amount into Payluk escrow. From this point, the milestones are locked. No further changes can be made to the structure after payment is confirmed.

Step 4: Work begins on the first milestone: The service provider starts work on the first agreed stage of the project. Your platform tracks progress however it is already set up to do so.

Step 5: The milestone is completed and confirmed: When the service provider has delivered on the first milestone, your platform triggers the release of the funds tied to that stage via an API call. The client confirms completion and the payment for that milestone is released.

Step 6: The process repeats for each remaining milestone: This continues stage by stage. Each time a milestone is completed and confirmed, your platform calls the API to release that portion of the funds. The remaining balance stays securely in escrow until the next milestone.

Step 7: The final milestone completes the project: When the last milestone is confirmed, the final payment is released and the transaction is complete. Both parties have fulfilled their obligations, and the funds have moved cleanly through the entire project lifecycle.

Who This Is Built For

The Payluk milestone escrow API is designed for any platform where work happens in stages and payment should follow.

Freelance, Gig Economy, and Artisan Platforms

Freelancers, independent contractors, and skilled artisans often take on projects that span days, weeks, or even months. A graphic designer delivering a full brand identity. A carpenter building custom furniture. A developer building a product over several sprints.

Without milestone escrow, the client either pays everything upfront and hopes for the best or waits until the end and leaves the service provider exposed. Neither works well.

With the Payluk API integrated into your platform, your users can structure any project into clear stages. The client deposits once. The service provider gets paid as they deliver. Both sides stay protected throughout.

Real Estate and Proptech Platforms

Off-plan property development is one of the highest risk transaction types in Nigeria. Buyers are being asked to pay for something that does not exist yet, and developers need consistent cash flow to fund construction.

Milestone escrow solves both problems. Your platform can structure payments around actual construction progress. Foundation complete. Structure complete. Finishing complete. Each stage triggers a release only when the buyer confirms progress. Developers receive funds as they build. Buyers only pay for what has actually been delivered.

For a proptech platform, this is a significant differentiator. You are not just listing properties. You are giving buyers and developers a structured, protected payment process that makes off-plan transactions genuinely safe.

Long Term Service Contract Platforms

Any platform that connects businesses with contractors or service providers for ongoing engagements can benefit from milestone escrow. Consulting projects, maintenance contracts, agency retainers, and procurement agreements all involve deliverables that come in phases.

Instead of leaving payment terms to informal agreements between your users, your platform can embed a structured milestone payment flow that keeps both sides accountable and protected from the first stage to the last.

Why This Makes Your Platform Stronger

Integrating milestone escrow into your product is not just a payment feature. It changes how your platform is perceived and how it performs.

Fewer disputes between your users: When payment is tied to clear, agreed milestones, there is very little room for disagreement about what was delivered and what was owed. Disputes drop because expectations are set upfront and tracked through the platform.

Higher trust and better retention: Users who feel protected on your platform come back. Clients who know their money is safe until each stage is confirmed are more willing to take on bigger projects. Service providers who know payment is secured before they start are more committed and more reliable.

No manual payment tracking for your team: Without milestone escrow, platforms often end up mediating payment disputes manually, chasing both parties for updates, and managing transfers that have nothing to do with their core product. The Payluk API automates all of this. Your team focuses on building the platform, not managing payments.

A competitive edge for high value projects: Large, long term projects go to platforms that can handle them properly. If your platform offers structured milestone payments with escrow protection built in, you become the obvious choice for serious clients and professional service providers who need more than a basic payment link.
