How to Buy Phones Safely on WhatsApp Without Getting Scammed

WhatsApp has become Nigeria's most active informal marketplace. Thousands of phone vendors operate WhatsApp channels and broadcast lists, selling everything from brand-new iPhones to UK-used Samsungs and Tecno handsets. The prices are often better than official stores, the delivery is fast, and the convenience is unmatched.

But WhatsApp commerce also comes with serious risks. With no built-in buyer protection, no identity verification, and no dispute mechanism, a bad transaction can cost you everything.

This guide gives you a complete framework for buying phones safely on WhatsApp, from first message to delivery.

Step 1: Research the Vendor Before You Engage

Before you send a message, do your homework.

  • How long has the WhatsApp account been active?

  • Do they have presence on Instagram, Jiji, or Facebook?

  • Is the number linked to a business name?

  • Were they recommended by someone you trust?

If you cannot confirm at least two of these, proceed with caution.

Step 2: Request Proof of the Actual Device

Do NOT trust photos from WhatsApp status.

Ask for:

  • A live photo of the phone with today’s date + your name

  • A short video showing the phone powered on

  • IMEI visible in settings

  • Packaging (if foreign-used device)

A real seller will provide this. A scammer cannot.

Step 3: Verify the IMEI

Check the IMEI using:

Confirm:

  • Correct device model

  • Not stolen

  • Not blacklisted

Any mismatch = WALK AWAY.

Step 4: Agree on the Deal and Use Escrow

Once satisfied:

  • Agree price

  • Confirm delivery terms

Then say:

“I use Payluk escrow. You create the transaction, I fund it, you deliver, I release payment.”

If the seller refuses escrow → 🚩 RED FLAG

Step 5: Inspect Immediately Upon Receipt

Before releasing payment:

  1. Check IMEI matches

  2. Inspect screen & body

  3. Test camera, speaker, mic

  4. Check battery health

  5. Confirm storage

  6. Ensure no Apple ID lock

Only confirm payment after satisfaction.

What If the Vendor Refuses Escrow?

  • Educate them (send Payluk link www.payluk.ng)

  • Explain it protects BOTH parties

If they still refuse → WALK AWAY
